Grace Van Patten talks ‘Tell Me Lies,’ toxic relationships!

In the tradition of “Ordinary People” and “Nine Perfect Strangers,” comes a new limited series on Hulu based on the bestselling novel, “Tell Me Lies.”

It charts the course of a turbulent love story over eight years and stars Grace Van Patten as a college student in her first big relationship.

Lucy is a student, while Stephen is two years older than him. He’s the college friend you’ll never forget, but Mr. Right is more wrong than Mr. Right when the relationship becomes toxic.

“I think at this age it’s easy to mistake desire for passion and novelty for love,” Van Patten said. “So that really makes her attached to him in an unhealthy way.”

“Tell Me Lies” is about the dangers of lack of communication, and Lucy’s journey mirrors Van Patten’s experience.

“Just in terms of having no idea who I am and I think I did,” she said. “I’ve been on a long journey to realize that vulnerability is the strongest and most beautiful thing in the world, and I hope Lucy realizes that too.”

It’s just one reason the star plays Lucy so compellingly and convincingly, and her development didn’t come about by itself.

“Treatment,” she said with a laugh. Lots of therapy and life experience.

Van Patten lived in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, before she recently moved to Los Angeles, and says she really misses New York City.

“(New York) has character,” she said. “Lots of variety…it will always be at home for me.”

Van Patten has held herself against some of the best actors in the world, including Nicole Kidman, Michael Shannon, and the “Nine Perfect Strangers” crew.

Playing different characters helped define her as one of the most skilled artists of her generation.

“Every character makes me examine another part of myself,” she said.

This was especially true in the case of Lucy in “Tell Me Lies”.

“I definitely learned about myself through the process and understood myself at that age a little bit more,” she said. “Which finally helped me understand myself now.”

The first four episodes are now broadcast on Hulu, which is owned by Disney, the parent company of this ABC station.

New episodes will air every Wednesday this fall.
